What a magnificent review of Blake Bailey's biography of Cheever, not only does Geoffry Wolff's review spark a new interest for me in Cheever, the praise for the biographer exceeds normative expectations.
It is most fascinating to read this review on the heels of the Cavett interview I recently saw of the Johns, Cheever and Updike, and the plays on words, or possible innuendo I now image.
But in any case, or all cases, looking into a man's journal, the basis for parts of the biography, can be dangerous if titillating, and while it is implied that Cheever wished it so, it might have been for self-understanding.
And it appears while Bailey might have not understand he did not judge.
This book may be well worth a long summer read.
